Session Duration: 4 hours
Session Objective:
This session aims to provide painters with foundational drawing skills to enhance their painting abilities. Participants will learn essential techniques and principles in drawing to improve their sketching techniques, composition, and observational skills.
Session Outline:
I. Introduction (15 minutes)
Welcome, and introduction to the course.
A brief overview of the importance of drawing skills for painters.
Introduction to the materials (paper, pencils, erasers, etc.)
II. Basic Drawing Techniques (45 minutes)
Review line, shape, and form: Understanding the fundamentals of drawing.
Contour drawing exercise: Outlining objects without lifting the pencil.
Value: Introduction to shading techniques (hatching, cross-hatching, stippling).
Still-life drawing exercise: Applying basic techniques to create form and depth.
III. Perspective Drawing (30 minutes)
Understanding perspective: One-point and two-point perspective.
Perspective drawing exercise: Sketching simple objects in one-point perspective.
Adding depth to compositions using perspective techniques.
IV. Composition and Proportion (45 minutes)
Rule of thirds: Understanding compositional balance and focal points.
Proportion and scale: Techniques for accurately representing objects in relation to each other.
Composition exercise: Creating a balanced composition using the rule of thirds and proportional guidelines.
V. Observational Drawing (60 minutes)
Importance of observation in drawing and painting -slow looking.
Still life, figure, or landscape drawing exercise: Observing and sketching.
Emphasis on capturing accurate proportions, shapes, and values through careful observation.
Working toward individual expressive qualities.
VI. Critique and Feedback (15 minutes)
Reviewing participants' work.
Providing constructive feedback and suggestions for improvement.
Encouraging discussion and questions from participants.
VII. Conclusion (15 minutes)
Recap of key concepts and techniques covered in the session.
Resources for further learning and practice (books, online tutorials, etc.)
Closing remarks and encouragement for continued practice and development.
