SUMMER ART CAMP

May 20, 2020: Featherstone Center for the Arts is committed to the health, safety, and creativity of our students and employees. We have made the difficult decision to cancel Featherstone's Summer Art Camp for the 2020 season. On March 16th Featherstone closed our doors due to COVID-19 at the recommendation of our federal, state and local authorities. Over the past two months we have hoped to receive a more positive outlook for the season ahead and awaited Governor Baker's announcement on May 18th. Unfortunately, there are still many uncertainties and protocols left to be defined. At this point, we have not received enough information regarding decreased class sizes and health protocols to be able to move forward with camp for the season.

We are hopeful to be able to offer limited size art classes for children and adults this summer once we are given the mandate from the state regarding safety and capacity protocols.

Featherstone offers weeklong art camps for children ages 3 through teens on our 6 acre bucolic campus, inspiring young minds to explore art and creativity. Camps are Monday through Friday, running from mid-June to mid-August for four age groups.
Further information, including required contact form can be found on the registration pages for each class below.
Days: Monday - Friday
Dates: June 15-19 // June 22-26 // June 29-July 2*
July 6-10 // July 13-17 // July 20-24 // July 27-31

Come find out what art means to the youngest among us!

Explore, Discover & Create Summer Art Camp with Charlotte Hall
for ages 6-8
Dare to explore, discover & create this summer!
Children will be encouraged to observe the world around them and what better place than in the serene natural beauty of Martha’s Vineyard?  Children will learn about wildlife both plants and animals spanning from the land, sky and sea. They will in turn have the opportunity to color their world utilizing different artistic mediums. Campers will further their scope of explorations to the night’s sky, planets and constellations.
Throughout our summer wildlife discovery, children will also learn about some of our favorite and inspirational artists.  They will be encouraged to study the masters while discovering and developing their own art making process.
This new Featherstone Summer Camp program is rooted in the foundation that by fostering a safe compassionate environment, where children have the freedom to explore the world around them, they will enhance their self confidence and discover a deeper understanding of their self expression through art.

They’ll learn to edit pictures in Adobe Photoshop and create inkjet prints. Constructive encouragement and feedback is ongoing while students spend the week doing a series of fun projects. At the end of class on Friday each student leaves with a portfolio/folder of new images. Bring your digital camera if you have one.
Projects include:
• portraiture — with natural light; self portraits and “studio” set-ups using props
• a photo scavenger hunt
• the Camera Obscura and pinhole cameras for making paper negatives
• creating digital negatives in Photoshop for contact printing a cyanotype positive on cotton watercolor paper
• the scanner as camera, for collage-making

Exploring Printmaking
This class supports the creativity, development and expression of young artists through the exploration of traditional and experimental printmaking techniques.  Mastery of tools and materials will provide students with the confidence to find their artistic voices.  This class can be tailored to the interests of those attending.

All materials are provided.
An introduction to several printmaking techniques including monoprinting, relief block printing and dry-point etching.
MONOTYPE: A unique print is a one-of-a-kind transfer of an inked or painted image from a Plexiglas plate to paper pressure or by means of a press. Sometimes there is enough ink or paint residue left on the plate surface to pull a second, much lighter print. This is called a “ghost”. Each transfer is unique and cannot be exactly duplicated.
RELIEF BLOCK PRINTING: The transfer of drawings and compositions that are cut into soft linoleum using carving tools and run a proof.
DRY-POINT ETCHING: "Drawing" into Plexiglas sheets with a metal scribe, ink the sheets and print the results.  This technique can be combined with other printmakingpossibilities, such as chine collé or with drawing to create a multi-layered final piece.

Acrylic Painting: Focusing on Color and Design
Welcome to Summer Art Camp and working with acrylics! We are going to continue to explore color

mixing, color theory and design.
• In this workshop we are going to work with a wide range of values through extensive color mixing in order to create contrasts and areas of emphasis in a unified work of art. We will discover how we can achieve a successful composition through the overlapping of images and grids. On the first day please bring in a box full of images, photos, objects, still- life subject matter, etc. that you will be interested in drawing, painting and fragmenting.
• We are going to analyze styles of art from the Expressionist, Cubist and Futuristic Movements and begin to plan out our compositions and fragmented grids. We will think about how we can create interesting compositions by zooming-in, cropping off and breaking up our spaces. You can create grids out of concentric circles, continuous overlays, geometric shapes, cracked lines, webbed patterns, asymmetrical design, etc.
• Painting on practice sheets, we will discuss and explore a wide variety of color theories so that we can decide which ones we want to incorporate in our paintings. In order to be successful, you will need to restrict yourself to a color theory. (mono-chromatic, tertiary, complementary, split-complementary, etc.)
• Once we sketch our ideas onto the canvas and have our grids figured out the fun begins. Every time you cross over the line, you must change the color. Always think in terms of contrasting values so that the image stands out. You are going to have to use extensive color mixing to achieve your goal.
Let's have fun!
Mural Making:
Join us for a unique opportunity to learn how to paint on a large scale with muralist, M-C Lamarre.  Explore the mural making process from site selection, design concept, to paint and preservation.  Be part of a new initiative to sprinkle Featherstone’s campus with site specific murals and signage.
Recycle. Reuse.  Repurpose:
Come and create art that may have a functional purpose.  Perhaps it is something new made out of upcycled old puzzles, or putting your own fun twist on a reusable canvas bag.  We will explore ways to reinvent old, found or discarded items into an object to serve a new purpose.
