Magic Garden Summer Camp highlights the process of painting. Classes are created in ways that are interactive, engaging and exciting. The process is the beauty for the young artist, not the outcome.

You will meet other Island families and those from afar, enjoy children-friendly walks in nature and create work in a peaceful, relaxing studio environment. Art illustrator quality materials are utilized for watercolor, pastel, sketching with charcoal and Lyra watercolor pencils, collage, flower petals, sunflower art, silk and sand painting, copper, wood, clay sculpture and mosaics.

Miss Lani founded and teaches our Magic Garden Summer Camp. In addition, Miss Lani is the founder and teacher of Featherstone’s young children’s Pre-School Arts Program during the week and on weekends during the school year. Her philosophy is to be “in touch” with our pre-school age children and youth as they participate in these activities in order that enjoyment is fostered.

A positive and nurturing climate is established because of the lovely quality of families we paint with and because we are present, we make time to talk individually with each child and interact respectfully with all children; each child is guided in positive peer interactions and behavior management strategies.

A natural and beautiful “order” is the result. “Mirroring” behavior that is warm and joyful characterizes Miss Lani’s teaching expertise. She believes our program is located in a place of rural Island dignity, like none other. It carries physical embodiments of the past, but also maintains in its very air a rare serenity – an other worldliness.

Please note:
Children must be toilet trained and 3 years of age at time of camp
Campers should bring a healthy, nut-free, mid-morning snack each day to camp.

Dare to explore, discover & create this summer!

Children will be encouraged to observe the world around them and what better place than in the serene natural beauty of Martha’s Vineyard? Children will learn about wildlife both plants and animals spanning from the land, sky and sea. They will in turn have the opportunity to color their world utilizing different artistic mediums. Campers will further their scope of explorations to the night’s sky, planets and constellations.

Throughout our summer wildlife discovery, children will also learn about some of our favorite and inspirational artists. They will be encouraged to study the masters while discovering and developing their own art making process.

This new Featherstone Summer Camp program is rooted in the foundation that by fostering a safe compassionate environment, where children have the freedom to explore the world around them, they will enhance their self confidence and discover a deeper understanding of their self expression through art.

Working With Acrylics: Focusing on Color and Design
with Donna Straw
For Ages 12 and older

For the week of July 10
Monday - Friday 9AM – 12PM $350 per week

Welcome to Summer Art Camp and working with acrylics. We are going to continue to explore color mixing, color theory and design.

• In this workshop we are going to work with a wide range of values through extensive color mixing in order to create contrasts and areas of emphasis in a unified work of art. We will discover how we can achieve a successful composition through the overlapping of images and grids. On the first day please bring in a box full of images, photos, objects, still- life subject matter, etc. that you will be interested in drawing, painting and fragmenting.

• We are going to analyze styles of art from the Expressionist, Cubist and Futuristic Movements and begin to plan out our compositions and fragmented grids. We will think about how we can create interesting compositions by zooming-in, cropping off and breaking up our spaces. You can create grids out of concentric circles, continuos overlays, geometric shapes, cracked lines, webbed patterns, asymmetrical design, etc.

• Painting on practice sheets, we will discuss and explore a wide variety of color theories so that we can decide which ones we want to incorporate in our paintings. In order to be successful, you will need to restrict yourself to a color theory. (mono-chromatic, tertiary, complementary, split-complementary, etc.)

• Once we sketch our ideas onto the canvas and have our grids figured out the fun begins. Every time you cross over the line, you must change the color. Always think in terms of contrasting values so that the image stands out. You are going to have to use extensive color mixing to achieve your goal.
Let's have fun!
