Summer Camp 2012

Each camp will run from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Monday through Friday each week.
Featherstone’s summer art camp programs are $350 per week.
The week of July 2-6 is $280 for the four-day camp.

Camp for ages 3-6

Magic Garden Summer Camp
For children ages 3 to 6
For the weeks of June 25, July 2, 9, 16, 23 & 30, August 6 &13
With Miss Lani Carney
*There will be no camp on July 4th

Magic Garden Summer Camp highlights the process of painting.  Classes are created in ways that are interactive, engaging and exciting. The process is the beauty for the young artist, not the outcome.

You will meet other Island families and those from afar, enjoy children-friendly walks in nature and create work in a peaceful, relaxing studio environment.  Art illustrator quality materials are utilized for watercolor, pastel, sketching with charcoal and Lyra watercolor pencils, collage, flower petals, sunflower art, silk and sand painting, copper, wood, clay sculpture and mosaics.

Miss Lani founded and teaches our Magic Garden Summer Camp. In addition, Miss Lani is the founder and teacher of Featherstone’s young children’s Pre-School Arts Program during the week and on weekends during the school year. Her philosophy is to be “in touch” with our pre-school age children and youth as they participate in these activities in order that enjoyment is fostered.

A positive and nurturing climate is established because of the lovely quality of families we paint with and because we are present, we make time to talk individually with each child and interact respectfully with all children; each child is guided in positive peer interactions and behavior management strategies.

A natural and beautiful “order” is the result.  “Mirroring” behavior that is warm and joyful characterizes Miss Lani’s teaching expertise.  She believes our program is located in a place of rural Island dignity, like none other.  It carries physical embodiments of the past, but also maintains in its very air a rare serenity – an other worldliness.

Vincent on the Vineyard
Mary Austin

Ever wonder what some of the most famous artists might like to see on Martha's Vineyard? Let's imagine Van Gogh's "Starry Night" over Aquinnah, Seurat's pointillistic view of "Sunday Afternoon in Ocean Park" or Monet's impression of Vineyard Haven Harbor at sunset.

Let's explore the island's vast array of subject matter through various artists' styles and techniques. We will draw, paint, print, make collages as well as create in 3D while learning about Expressionism, Impressionism, Cubism, Pointillism, Pop Art, and the Fauves just to name a few. In this class, children will not only learn about famous artists, explore and work with varied media while making connections with Vineyard themes but will also get in touch with their own "artist within". Families will be able to enjoy an art show of the week's projects each Friday.

Photography Exploration
Karen Lehman

This fun, exciting and educational fine-art oriented Photography Exploration will expose campers to several photography techniques and processes. Projects will include using digital cameras to make portraits, landscapes and close-up abstractions, making photograms in the darkroom, making pinhole camera pictures, and using the scanner as a camera. Students will leave with a folder/portfolio of the week’s work. On Fridays, students will share their work from the week with parents and visitors. Not required but it would be helpful if students were able bring their own small digital camera with a memory card in it. Equipment and supplies for projects will be provided by the instructor.

Camp for ages 11 and older

Photography Exploration, Acrylic Painting, Printmaking & Silkscreening

For ages 11 and older

July 2-6 (no July 4): Photography Exploration with Karen Lehman
July 9-13: Photography Exploration with Karen Lehman

Photography Exploration
Karen Lehman

This fun, exciting and educational fine-art oriented Photography Exploration will expose students to a myriad of photography techniques and processes, from traditional to digital, often combining the two. Stuents will work with traditional 35mm single lens reflex cameras and make prints in the darkroom. They will also make images with the pinhole, Holga, and digital single lens reflex cameras and a scanner. Images will be on display throughout the week, with continuous positive feedback and discussion. The Elements and Principles of art as described in the Massachusetts Frameworks (Department of Education) will be introduced and utilized as children begin to understand and articulate the elements of a successful photographic image.

Other projects and techniques will include making photograms and “inverting” paper negatives to make positive images. Tuesdays will be a dedicated Field Trip day, where parents will drop off children off at Ocean Park in Oak Bluffs. Students will generate a lot of images with different cameras. We will end this walking field-trip day with a visit to a photo studio/gallery. On Fridays, students will share their work from the week with parents and visitors, and take home a varied portfolio of images and a newfound love for photography.

The following is a suggested equipment list. If campers have these items, please bring them. If you do not have
them, they will be provided by the instructor. A 35mm film SLR camera, any kind of digital camera and a flash drive to store digital photos and scans. Students who have a laptop will be encouraged to bring it in on one or two days during the week. If the laptop has Adobe Photoshop that would be great.

July 16-20:
Acrylic Painting with Donna Straw

Working with Acrylics- Putting it All Together
Donna Straw

Have you been wanting to work in acrylics,
exploring color and design? In this session we will work within the structure of a 12 box grid, incorporating open- ended subject matter and different artistic requirements and still create a cohesive work of art. We will discover how the Elements of Art (line, color, shape, space and texture) and the Principles of Design ( variety, positive and negative space, symmetry, asymmetry, gradation, alternation, contrast, dominance, emphasis, unity) serve to unify a 12 box grid. Students will demonstrate their understanding through the manipulation of these elements and principles by connecting individual pieces together in order to make the whole greater than the sum of its parts. The project will be individualized for each student and all levels are welcome.

July 23-27: Printmaking - Monotypes with Allison Doherty

Monotypes
Allison Doherty

A  unique print is a one‐of‐a‐kind transfer of an inked or painted image from a Plexiglas plate to paper pressure or by means of a press. Sometimes there is enough ink or paint residue left on  the plate surface to pull a second, much lighter print. This is called a “ghost”. Each transfer is unique and cannot be exactly duplicated. Unique prints stand in
contrast to editioned prints, in which each print in the edition is identical and appreciated not only for the artistry of the image,  but also for the technical ability of the master printmaker to create an edition of identical prints.

Monotypes and monoprints often combine painting with printmaking  techniques. Oil‐  or water‐based paper monotype may have no further treatment of the paper surface, or might include other elements such  as collage, drawing and/or other printed or painted elements.  A monoprint contains lines or images that can be repeated exactly, from one impression to the  next, such as etched lines, a carved woodblock or a lithographic drawing. The artist varies the  inking in each image, creating a unique impression.

In this class, we will look primarily at creating monotypes. You will be shown two essential
monotype methods of working on a plate: the additive method, whereby your image is painted
directly on the plate; and the subtractive method, whereby you remove aspects of a fully inked plate to  develop a negative image.  Afterward, you will work back into the surface of your prints  with either oil  or water‐based drawing mediums, such as oil pastels, watercolors, drawing inks,  or  dry mediums such as pastel, colored pencils, and pencil. The use of stencils and the addition of collaged elements will also be discussed.

Drawing/painting skills are developed along the way as you become more comfortable and familiar withbut if you have specific ideas about images that you would like to create, you are welcome to discuss ideas school, please bring them, as we can ʺmineʺ your images for print material.  Additionally, if you have a out what directions each of you might want to take.  Come prepared to get messy and have fun!

July 30-August 3: Printmaking – Relief Block Prints with Allison Doherty

Relief Block Prints
Allison Doherty

Students  will  spend  some  time  sketching  from  nature  and  chose  a  preliminary composition  to  become  the  basis  for  a  relief  print. After  students  transfer  their drawings,  they will cut their compositions into soft linoleum using carving tools and run a proof. Students will then print editions of their work, enough for each participant, and create a simple book which holds a signed print by every student.

August 6-10: Silkscreening with Sabrina Kuchta
August 13-17: Silkscreening with Sabrina Kuchta

Silkscreening
Sabrina Kuchta

We will learn the entire process of silk screening, from preparing the screens to making tee shirts, posters, and printing on alternative surfaces. Students will fully engross themselves in the silkscreen mindset and the idea of the multi-print.
