Upcoming Shows 2018

Join us for the Opening of
The Beautiful Difference
with Guest Curator Sandra Grymes
on Sunday, August 12 from 4-6PM.

The Beautiful Difference celebrates the artistic achievements of nearly twenty-five artists of different generations who share African descent, primarily African American heritage. Their work is representative of a broad spectrum of artistic practice - including figurative and abstract painting, mixed media and prints, photography, and sculpture. Disparate in style yet unified by the variance that is blackness, freed from a fixed racial position and open to the complexities of life, each work of art in this exhibition reflects what makes blackness the beautiful difference.

This exhibition brings together among others the works of Romare Bearden, Henri Guedon, Norman Lewis, Al Loving, Sam Middleton, Claude Lawrence, Thaddeus Mosley and Betye Saar. It also features artwork by contemporary photographers Adger Cowans, John Pinderhughes, Frank Stewart, and LaToya Ruby Frazier and mixed media artists Stan Squirewell, Nathaniel Lewis, and Maria Lana Queen.

In The Beautiful Difference, each work meets across difference - both aesthetic and thematic - to highlight how artistic practice uniquely supports each artist’s expression of their relationship to their identity and to the world.

The Beautiful Difference is organized and curated by Sandra Grymes, an Oak Bluffs resident who serves on the board of the Studio Museum in Harlem.  Adrienne Childs, Beryl Briane Ford, Sing Lathan, and Nancy Washington assisted with the curation of this exhibition. The exhibition honors Francine Kelly who positioned Featherstone to be a vibrant and inclusive art community.

The show will continue through September 3, 2018.

And on Sunday, August 12, at 4 and 5PM
there will be a Gallery Walk Through
with Art Historian Adrienne L. Childs
