The Urge To Create Book Launch
Monday, June 13 from 6:00 - 8:00PM

The Urge To Create:  Vineyard Portraits

The island of Martha’s Vineyard is home to a thriving and diverse creative community.  The Urge To Create: Vineyard Portraits is a collection of 50 written and photographic profiles of island artists and creative people.  The subjects were chosen for the persistence and passion they bring to their creative art or arts.  Intensive interviews were conducted, audio recorded and transcribed.  Drawing on an oral history tradition, a written profile was developed drawing only on the spoken word of each subject.  The written profiles were paired with photographic portraits, taken by island photographers both budding and professional.  The Urge To Create: Vineyard Portraits is an homage to the creative spirit of these generative artists, quietly persistent and transformative. A portion of the proceeds of the sale of the book will be donated to Featherstone Center for the Arts.

Jane Dreeben has been involved with various collaborative arts projects over the past ten years.  She currently produces musicals in partnership with island young people and their families as benefits for Vineyard non-profits. She has also worked as a teacher, administrator, board member, fundraiser and psychologist.

This book launch event on Monday, June 13, 6 - 8 pm, will feature Ann Smith, Director of Featherstone Center for the Arts, and Featherstone teachers and community members including Julia Mitchell, tapestry weaver and singer, Liz Taft, painter, Bruce MacNelly, architect and musician, and music by Jeremy Berlin and Eric Johnson, all of whom who are featured in the book.  Books will be available for purchase and signing.
