March 15 - April 8:
Take a Seat: The Chair Show

We all have them- they live in our homes, offices, on the porch, and at the beach.

So many of us on island use repurposed materials and structures to create warm comfortable spaces. We want to see how you the artist can find inspiration in the daily often over looked object: “The Chair”. Whether it’s painting, drawing, sculpting, woodworking, welding, reupholstering or using unconventional materials, we encourage all artists to think outside the box. Don’t be shy! Let’s create our own usable, or non usable chair, to plant our bodies or merely for decoration.

Opening Reception:
Sunday, March 15th 4pm - 6pm
Open Daily from 12pm-4pm through Wednesday April 8th

Bob Silberling Photography Retrospective

Bob Silberling was a seasonal resident on Martha’s Vineyard for many years and for the last few years of his life a full time islander.

A graduate of UCLA’s undergraduate and masters’ Motion Picture program, Bob’s professional career included film production for the US Information Agency under Edward R. Murrow during the Kennedy Administration and over 30 years as a programming executive and producer for ABC and CBS networks.

His career in broadcasting and television production was a highly collaborative process but in his retirement he enjoyed the fulfillment of singular endeavor in black and white as well as color still photography. He could perceive an image, photograph it, process the film and attempt to convey the emotion and spirit of his experience in an expressive print.

Travel, within the United States and abroad, was an important part of Bob’s life. He felt taking these trips to photograph a destination was like going to a foreign country to learn a language: it was total immersion and most fulfilling. It gave him the ability to devote time to ‘see’ and ‘experience’ an area and then try to capture that emotion on film.

Bob was an enthusiastic supporter of Featherstone and participated in group shows here. He would be so pleased to see his work displayed and enjoyed in this exhibit.

After a three and a half year battle with ALS, Bob died on September 23, 2013 but the images which he created remain, a vital legacy of his indomitable spirit.

One 4th of July, Helen broke her ankle, the summer ahead looked bleak since she would not be able to do any of the things she loved to do, so at age 50 she started taking drawing classes with Ruth Mead at the Old Sculpin Gallery. That was the start of her new found love of making art which has continued unabated to this day. She  went on to study painting , watercolor, oil ,acrylic and pastels. Helen has had numerous shows at Old Sculpin and then when Featherstone was started almost 20 years ago, she took classes, worked in the Gallery and showed there also. At 93 Helen paints everyday and is still taking classes most recently with Roberta Gross at Featherstone
